Raw Dog Food Transition Timeline: Week by Week

Jan 27, 2025

A week-by-week raw dog food transition plan for Edmonton dog owners. Here is exactly what to do each week to switch your dog to raw without digestive disruption.

A week-by-week transition plan is the most reliable way to switch your dog to raw food without digestive disruption. Here is what to expect at each stage.

Before You Start

Make sure you have enough freezer space for at least one to two weeks of food. Decide which protein you are starting with. Have a portion of raw thawing in the refrigerator before day one so you are ready to go.

Week One: 25 Percent Raw

Replace approximately 25 percent of your dog's current food with raw. If your dog normally eats two cups of kibble per day, replace half a cup with raw and keep the rest the same.

Feed the raw and kibble at separate meals if possible, as they digest at different rates. Watch for any changes in your dog's stool, appetite, or energy. Loose stools during this week are common and generally nothing to worry about.

Week Two: 50 Percent Raw

Increase to a 50/50 split. Most dogs move through this stage without issue. If your dog is still showing signs of digestive adjustment from week one, spend an extra few days at 25 percent before moving forward.

Week Three: 75 Percent Raw

Move to 75 percent raw, 25 percent previous food. By this point most dogs have adapted well and are showing enthusiasm at mealtimes.

Week Four: 100 Percent Raw

Your dog is now fully on raw. Continue with the single protein you started with for at least another week or two before introducing any variety.

What If Things Go Wrong?

If your dog experiences prolonged loose stools beyond the first week or two, or shows other concerning symptoms, slow the transition down. Go back to a lower percentage of raw for a few more days and advance more gradually. If symptoms persist, speak with your veterinarian.

After the Transition

Once your dog is settled on a single protein and their digestion is stable, you can begin introducing protein variety gradually if you choose. Add one new protein at a time and give it a week or two before adding another.
