Raw Dog Food with Bone Broth Edmonton

Mar 31, 2025

Bone broth is a popular addition to raw feeding routines. Here is what it is, how Edmonton raw feeders use it, and how it fits alongside a complete raw diet.

Bone broth has become a popular addition to many raw feeding routines, and Edmonton dog owners increasingly ask about it as a complement to their dog's raw diet.

What Is Bone Broth for Dogs?

Bone broth is made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue in water over a long period, typically anywhere from several hours to a full day. The slow cooking process extracts collagen, gelatin, and minerals from the bones into the liquid.

Dog-safe bone broth does not include onion, garlic, salt, or other seasonings that are common in broths made for human consumption. Plain bone broth with no additives is the appropriate option for dogs.

How Raw Feeders Use Bone Broth

Bone broth is typically used as a meal enhancer rather than a primary food. Common uses include:

Pouring a small amount over a raw meal to add palatability, particularly for picky eaters or dogs transitioning to raw. See our guide on how to transition your dog to a raw food diet for other tips on getting reluctant dogs started.

Freezing in ice cube trays as a treat or food topper.

Adding liquid to freeze-dried raw food when rehydrating it.

It is worth noting that bone broth is a supplement, not a complete food. It adds flavour and some additional nutrients but does not replace any component of a balanced raw diet. For a full breakdown of what a complete raw meal contains, see our guide on what raw dog food is made of.

Making vs Buying

Some raw feeders make their own bone broth at home using raw or roasted beef, chicken, or pork bones. It requires time but is straightforward. Others purchase ready-made dog-safe bone broth from pet specialty retailers.

Bone broth is not currently a standalone product in the Hound and Bone range, but several of our complete raw blends make excellent bases for a meal where broth could be added as a topper. Browse our range to find the right blend, and reach out at info@houndandbone.ca for any questions.
