Raw Dog Food Left Out Too Long: What to Do

Raw dog food left out at room temperature for more than one to two hours should be discarded. Here is what Edmonton raw feeders need to know and how to prevent it.

It happens to most raw feeders at some point. A meal gets forgotten, something comes up, and the raw food ends up sitting out longer than it should. Here is how to handle it.

How Long Is Too Long?

Raw dog food left at room temperature should not sit for more than one to two hours. Beyond that, bacterial growth enters a range that makes the food potentially unsafe to serve, regardless of how fresh it was when it came out of the fridge.

In warmer weather, this window is shorter. On a hot summer day, food left out in direct sunlight or a warm room may not be safe after even an hour.

What to Do If It Has Been Left Out Too Long

If raw dog food has been sitting at room temperature for longer than two hours, the safest course of action is to discard it. This is frustrating, but it is the right call.

Do not refrigerate or refreeze food that has been left out too long and serve it later. Refrigeration or refreezing does not eliminate bacteria that have already developed during the time the food spent at room temperature. See our post on can you refreeze raw dog food after thawing for the full guidance on safe refreezing.

Preventing It from Happening

The simplest way to avoid the situation is to serve raw food and remove the bowl once your dog has finished eating. Most dogs eat their raw meals within a few minutes. Remove the bowl promptly, wash it, and put any remaining uneaten food back in the fridge or discard it. Our guide on how to handle raw dog food safely at home covers feeding hygiene step by step.

If your dog is a slow or intermittent eater, consider reducing portion sizes so the meal is consumed in one sitting rather than grazed over an extended period.

In Hot Weather

Edmonton summers can be warm, and this matters for raw feeding. During hot weather, pay extra attention to how quickly raw food is consumed and how long the bowl sits. Moving your dog's feeding area to a cooler spot in the house during summer months is a simple way to manage this.
